Styliani Roufou from the University of Malta, supervised by Prof Vasilis Valdramidis, describes how presenting her work at a conference - with support from AMI’s Scientific Conference Abstract Scholarship grant scheme - has instilled her with a sense of purpose.
Earlier this month, the PhD student travelled to the University of Hokkaido in Sapporo, Japan, for the 12th International Conference on Predictive Modelling in Food.
There she gave a presentation entitled ‘Αssessment of the pH and temperature on the resistance of eGFP-labelled Escherichia coli strains’, a novel study that focuses on the molecular responses of bacteria under stress conditions.
She says:
Participation in this conference allowed me to get feedback from experts in predictive microbiology worldwide, which will help me further develop this study. The feedback from other participants helped to further exploit my research outcomes, and raised the possibility of collaboration with other institutes.
Moreover, my presentation may help other students to adopt gene expression analysis in their research, which justifies the importance of pH in the microbiology community (and beyond). Hence, this conference has broadened my knowledge and strengthened my professional network. Building these meaningful relationships could open doors to potential partnerships, mentoring opportunities and invaluable advice. Participating at this conference has served as a stepping stone to fostering a strong support system and making connections that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavours.
Expanding perspectives
Furthermore, the conference has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to immerse myself in a gathering of industry leaders, experts and like-minded professionals. Engaging in workshops, keynote speeches, and interactive sessions has expanded my perspectives, fostering a deep appreciation for the power of continuous learning and professional development.
The diverse range of sessions and panel discussions have provided me with insights and practical strategies to implement in my work. This exposure to cutting-edge ideas and emerging technologies has equipped me with a competitive edge, enabling me to contribute more effectively to my organisation and the industry as a whole. Being able to highlight my participation in a renowned conference on my resume and in job interviews will undoubtedly increase my chances of securing exciting career opportunities.
In conclusion, the conference attendance grant has been a transformative force in my professional life. It has provided me with invaluable knowledge, expanded my network, and empowered me to remain at the forefront of my research. I am immensely grateful for the opportunities this grant has afforded me and eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on my ongoing journey of growth and success.
